These Two Men Hate The Irish!

b&jI opened my google news tonight, folded it open to the “oddly enough” section, to relax to some non earth rending news to unwind my week. Unfortunately I came face to face with this.

Are you flippin kidding me??? The Irish think that Ben & Jerry’s, the most liberal-friendly company in all the land, named a ice cream flavor after a violent English paramilitary force rather than the infinitely more identifiable alchoholic drink??

I’m really starting to think democracy is not such a great idea.

I’ll say it, “Black & Tan” (I love me a Bass and Guiness)

Here is the Junk Food Blog that discusses the Black and Tan flavor. The flavor of the ice cream looks delicious, the politics in the comments are quite distasteful.

I can’t figure out the motive of this, what is the big deal? I’m part Irish, should I be offended?

Here was a Rant I had on political correctness, where I quote another essay.

    The money quote:

No one wants to listen to a whiner.

According B&J’s flavor locator, they have it at the Albertson’s around the corner from my house. I’m heading out right now to get a pint!

I liked this commnet on the blog you referenced:

Just a note: the Black & Tan drink was created to be sly twist on the name of the RUC thugs. Being made by first pouring an English beer (Bass) and then an Irish beer (Guinness), the bartender preparing a Black & Tan can ensure that the Irish always end up on top.

    That is all. Resume sniping.

You know Julius Caesar killed an awful lot of people in his conquests of Europe and Asia. Is no one whining over the salad? Or the Orange Julius?

Ok, back from picking up 2 pints of the Black & Tan. I must say it is quite tasty! If anyone hears of them discontinuing it please let me know. I’ll clear out the freezer section.

And to continue my quest to mix the celebration of violent and tragic death with tasty sweet-cream deserts… I added to my cart a pint of “The Gobfather”, a chocolatey, almondy salute to Italian gang-land crimelords throughout history. I also grabbed a pint of “Dublin Mudslide”… which couldn’t have been too pleasant for those involved either.

These crazy nutters have actually brought a lot of good to the world though if you think about it:

    1) I know a little more about history. I had no idea about this brutal military squad or their role in Ireland.

    2) I found a new ice cream I like a lot.

    3) Ben & Jerry’s are likely experiencing at least a small uptick in sales over this (I know *I* bought 4 more pints of their frozen goodness than I’ve bought in the last few years).

You see Jeremy… everything balances out!

  5. Jeremy Says:

I looked for it at my store, and they didn’t have any.

Now I’m craving this stuff and I’ve never had it!

    *cries*

Alright, UPDATE. I found some of this flavor in Tucson, and I hunted it down.

I just finished the pint, and YUM! I’m not one who likes Ice Cream. (I’ll eat it, but if offered I’ll often decline) And this was one tasty ice cream.

I hope Ben and Jerry’s doesn’t cave to this silliness.

  7. Jeremy Says:

Now my local grocery store is carrying this wonderful flavor.

I’m glad to see the offense has departed and the Ice Cream has stayed.

  8. Jeremy Says:

Have I mentioned I love this flavor of Ice Cream?

    Devouring a pint now…

  9. Bradley Says:

polished off a pint last night (after having the black & tan drink at lunch!)

  10. Jeremy Says:

I’ve got a pint waiting at home.

Safeway keeps giving me these 2-for-1 coupons for Ben and Jerry’s. I can’t let them go to waste!
